We received 25 impressive applications, and the recipient of local government’s most valuable scholarship is Anneka Ferguson, Acting Manager of Community & Economic Development, Dorset Council, TAS. Congratulations Anneka!!
Once we've had a chance to talk to Anneka, we'll introduce her to the wider community.
In the meantime, we’d like to introduce you to the successful applicant from the United States, who will be coming to Australia, and also hosting Anneka in Coconino County, Arizona.
Coconino County, where Marie works, has several characteristics that intersect with many Australian local government entities, in terms of size, tourist-drawing natural wonders, and as home to multiple Indigenous communities. Coconino is the second largest (in area) county in the USA, features the Grand Canyon National Park, and has a number of Native American Reservations.
Administratively, Coconino County provides multiple services including law enforcement and probation supervision, courts, community services, career services, parks and recreation, emergency management, and school superintendents. To add a little more perspective, the overall Coconino County budget for FY17 is $179,694,693.
Marie’s CV is full of community engagement roles, often dealing with budget constraints and sensitive issues, which means she has a wealth of experience to share with professionals here, and she’s bound to have questions for you too: ‘I am interested in learning how public health and governmental initiatives are enacted in other jurisdictions, how they’re funded and made sustainable, and strategies to engage the public and populations served on a civic level.’ Marie will be in Australia in May 2017 and attending the 2017 National Congress in Hobart, so look out for her say Hi. You can be sure, Marie and her husband Marc, who might also be able to join her, will be keen to experience new, Australian-flavoured adventures while they’re here.
