Mature Age Workforce Toolkit
An initiative of the Australian Centre for Excellence in Local Government and LG Professionals Australia
Australian council organisations (1) are keen to be seen as preferred employers to ensure that they can attract the best employees to subsequently deliver the best service to their community. In order to do this, your organisation will need to make its employment offer very clear to current and potential employees. One aspect of your employment offer is the way in which your organisation outlines its commitment to its mature age workers.
WHO SHOULD USE THE RESOURCE?
The Mature Age Workforce Resource 2015 is a guide to be used by Human Resources or Organisation Development (HR/OD) practitioners and leadership teams in Australian council organisations.
This resource is designed to enable HR/OD professionals and leadership teams to focus specifically on cultural development and change with regard to:
- workers aged 45 years (2) and over (mature age workers);
- mature age workers seeking to extend their employment with the council organisation; and,
- re-engagement of past employees and retirees.
The benefits of addressing the mature age workforce in performance management discussions include increased productivity and awareness, improved cultural awareness and engagement of staff members in the mature age workforce agenda and increased focus on the needs of aged workers.
Leaders are encouraged to be innovative and apply contemporary human resource management principles and practices when assessing the merits of workplace flexibility strategies designed to attract and retain mature age workers.
