Glen Albyn Estate lived up to all expectations, and you beautiful people of local government scrubbed up pretty well too! More photos coming soon.
As we've discovered over the years, while local government's focus is, obviously, local, many LG professionals and their councils have a much wider worldview. And given the skills within the Australian local government sector to work with and within communities, our sector is well-placed to provide expertise and technical skills to countries where the need is overwhelming their own fledging systems.
LG Professionals Australia has several successful International Programs currently running, however we are also on the cusp of making big decisions on our future programs. We'd like you to get involved. As a first step, join us at Congress to discuss what's possible in the international arena, and if you can't make it to Congress, but you'd like more information or to get involved, either let us know in the comments or watch this space.

This session will explore how Australian local government can contribute to other countries where democracy is fragile, poverty is intractable, institutions are weak, and resources are scarce. It will also explore what opportunities and challenges the local government sector has in promoting international development and how it can be mutually benefiting.

Coorong District Council – Accidental Art Gallery
In 2014, Coorong District Council built a state-of-the-art civic centre in Tailem Bend. The Director of Community and Corporate was charged with addressing the bare walls (with support from the CEO), and from this, developed an innovative and accidental art gallery. The transformation started as a community call-out on Facebook for ‘loan art’; the response was unexpected and overwhelming. The leadership team responded, allocating $15,000 to make impromptu alterations to accommodate exhibition space. Within 18 months the $85,000 rural renewal program ‘Creating Coonalpyn’ emerged; a suite of community arts projects in a struggling town. Its flagship project is a silo mural, and when completed in February 2017, will be SA’s largest art canvas.
Nominations for this category recognise the outstanding achievements of an emerging leader to the local government sector. This Emerging Leader of the Year Award recognises leadership and management excellence by an emerging local government employee who has demonstrated an outstanding commitment to their community and whose performance is worthy of special recognition.
There's more on each of the nominees at the end of this post.
